Understanding the Two Main Proxy Types
Choosing the right proxy type is the most important decision you will make on ProxyPorts. Each type serves different use cases, and picking the wrong one can lead to blocks, slow speeds, or wasted money.
Data Center Proxies
Data Center proxies route your traffic through servers hosted in commercial data centers. They are:
- Fast — Typically the fastest option because they run on high-performance server infrastructure.
- Affordable — Lower cost per IP compared to ISP proxies.
- Easily detected — Strict anti-bot systems (Cloudflare, major social media platforms) can identify data center IP ranges and block them. These IPs do not belong to residential internet providers, so websites know they are not regular home users.
Data Center proxies are a great choice for tasks where detection is not a concern — such as accessing geo-restricted content, general browsing, or working with websites that do not employ aggressive anti-proxy measures.
ISP Proxies
ISP proxies use IP addresses assigned by real Internet Service Providers (like Comcast, Vodafone, or BT). They combine the speed of data center hosting with the legitimacy of residential IPs:
- High trust level — Websites see these IPs as belonging to real residential users.
- Required for social media — Platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram actively block data center IPs. ISP proxies are mandatory for managing accounts on these platforms.
- More expensive — The added legitimacy comes at a higher price point.
Important Limitations to Understand
Even with ISP proxies, some platforms employ extremely aggressive anti-bot systems. For example, Twitch uses advanced behavioral analysis that goes far beyond IP checking. Using proxies for activities like view-botting on Twitch does not guarantee your sessions will remain active — the platform may still detect and block automated behavior regardless of IP quality.
Quick Decision Guide
| Use Case | Recommended Type |
|---|---|
| General browsing / geo-unblocking | Data Center |
| Social media account management | ISP |
| Web scraping (non-protected sites) | Data Center |
| Web scraping (protected sites) | ISP |
| E-commerce / sneaker bots | ISP |
| Ad verification | ISP |
When in doubt, start with ISP proxies. They work everywhere data center proxies work, plus the platforms that require residential-grade IPs.
