The Most Common Proxy Error
"Invalid Credentials" and "Authentication Failed (E1)" are by far the most frequently reported issues — and in the vast majority of cases, the fix is simple.
Top Causes and Fixes
1. Invisible Characters When Copying Credentials
This is the #1 cause. When you manually select and copy your username or password from the dashboard, you may accidentally include invisible whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, or line breaks) at the beginning or end of the text.
Fix: Always use the copy icon (clipboard button) next to your credentials on the ProxyPorts dashboard. This copies the exact text without any extra characters.
2. Confusing Similar-Looking Characters
If you type credentials manually, watch out for these common mix-ups:
- The letter "O" vs. the number "0"
- The letter "l" (lowercase L) vs. the number "1"
- The letter "I" (uppercase i) vs. the letter "l" (lowercase L)
Fix: Do not type credentials manually. Always copy-paste using the dashboard\'s copy icon.
3. Expired Proxy
If your proxy subscription has expired, the credentials will no longer work. Check your dashboard for the proxy\'s expiration date.
4. Wrong Authentication Method
If you have set up IP Whitelisting, you do not need a username and password — and vice versa. Make sure you are using the correct method for your configuration.
Still Getting the Error?
If you have verified all the above and the error persists:
- Clear any saved proxy credentials in your browser or application.
- Restart the application.
- Try connecting from a different browser or device to rule out local configuration issues.
- Contact support with your proxy endpoint details (host and port — never share your password in tickets).
